Is Shifting Negative Self-Talk "Enough"?

The other day I was checking in with a private client before our session. I asked her what her outlook was on things right now.

She replied that she wasn’t sure if there was more she was supposed to be doing “besides shifting the negative self-talk”.

I loved this reflection.

So I asked her, “what would your life be like without the negative self-talk?”

The response from her and clients just like her?

I would be more creative.

I would move my body more.

I would try new hobbies.

I wouldn’t tell myself I can’t do anything new.

I would go out more.

I would be more loving to others.

I would have more patience in my job.

I would need to eat for comfort less.

I would wear clothes I really liked.

I wouldn’t worry so much about what other people think.

I would move to a new town.

I would care less about my age.

I would start a new relationship.

I would have a more satisfying sex life.

I would leave my job which I haven’t liked for years.

So it seems pretty clear to me that shifting the negative self-talk is the pathway to a better quality of life. It’s the pathway to more engagement. It’s the pathway to new opportunities. It’s the pathway to vibrancy and aliveness.

It’s not necessarily an easy pathway. And sometimes it really feels like nothing is happening. And then one day you realize that you feel lighter. Your mood is brighter. You want to go out and find new ways to enjoy your life. You have far less concern when things don’t go exactly as planned.

You have stopped taking everything so personally. Everything you do is NOT a reflection of your worth. You are worthy no matter what.

Your self-talk becomes an ally and an important check engine light. It will let you know when you are nervous and need more reassurance. It will let you know when you might be stretching your comfort zone.

And if you cultivate it, your self-talk can also celebrate the crap out of you daily for navigating your life with curiosity and courage.

I invite you to explore your self-talk. What would life be like if you didn’t feel triggered by it?  What if you let it come and go like clouds in the sky? What if you didn’t respond as if it was telling the truth? What if you knew it was only trying to protect you and keep you safe?

What if you didn’t need negative self-talk to keep you safe and small anymore because you have your own back?
